As the new year rises on the horizon, it provides a moment to reflect on all that has passed in 2023.

The Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III in May was a historic and momentous occasion. It was an honour to witness the ceremony, ahead of taking up post as the Governor of the Turks and Caicos Islands in June. It certainly has been a full six months, which has included district tours across each of our islands; three UK Ministerial visits; Cabinet, National Security and stakeholder meetings; and organisational events recognising and nurturing the diverse talents, charitable focus and achievements of key sectors of the Turks and Caicos Islands.

During the course of 2023, the unprecedented realities of irregular migration and transnational crime have kept a keen focus on national security – intensifying law enforcement measures; investment in multi-agency operations; and strengthening regional and international partnerships to build strategic and tactical support. The committed efforts of our law enforcement officers and marines, to the defence and security of our islands, continues to be a source of national pride.

For the public service, 2023 has been a year of building. Despite the challenges of our external environment, the public service has continued to drive delivery of critical services and strengthen key protections. Over the last six months, I have met a range of dedicated public officers working to make a difference, enable innovation and provide confidence in the delivery of public sector duties and accountability.

This year also saw members of the Government and Opposition engage in ground breaking and productive talks with the United Kingdom Government on constitutional reform, reflecting a bipartisan effort, to drive forward a more modern constitutional governance of the Turks and Caicos Islands.

As we celebrated the 75th anniversary of the UN Declaration of Human Rights, we also recognised the active impact and incredible discretionary efforts of organisations and individuals from across the Turks and Caicos Islands who assist the vulnerable, promote dignity and provide inspiration for hope.

Whilst 2023 has presented its challenges, it has been a year of achievement and opportunity. I look forward to a new year of strengthened partnerships as we strive together in growth and excellence. Happy New Year!
