Other parliamentarians should emulate and follow suit
First, let me take this opportunity to publicly congratulate Hon. Tamell Seymour on the victory at the poll.
During the campaign, the noise in the market was that Hon Tamell was going to win. However, I must admit that based on what happened in 2016 when Hon. McAllister Hanchell ran independently in South Caicos, he did not win,so I thought Tamell would not win.
Anyway, the people have clearly spoken, casting 56% of the votes to Hon. Tamell Seymour. This is the third time an independent candidate has won a seat in South Caicos, with Hon. Liam Mabeing the first in 1976 and Hon. Norman Saunders being the second in 1995.
It has only been three weeks since we had our general election, and Hon. Tamell Seymour is establishing a successful transformative path in the constituency of South Caicos. The other parliamentarians should follow suit if they have done so yet.
The establishment of a constituency office.
Anyone that has been following my writings know that I am advocate for the establishment of constituency offices and local government throughout Turks and Caicos Islands.
I know during the campaign time, many politicians establish offices in their constituencies, then after the elections are over, those offices normally do not remain open. I may be wrong, but that is what I have observed over the past years.
Well, in March 2025, Hon. Seymour will be opening a constituency office in Conch Ground, South Caicos. I love this initiative, and I challenge all the parliamentarians to open an office in their constituency. This is a great opportunity for residents to share their concerns with their representatives.
Hon. Seymour will use his constituency allowance along with his personal funds to cover the rent of the space.
He is very visible
Hon. Seymour is also very visible in the community of South Caicos. Many times, our politicians are only visible during the campaign season and at funerals, but Hon. Seymour remains visible.
Mingle with the people
A common thing from most people during the campaign is that some politicians do not mingle with people. Some people did not know the candidates. Well, Hon. Seymour not only remains visible in the community, but he is mingling with everyone, no matter what their background. You know for some people, this is very important
Won the hearts of the people
Hon. Seymour was able to win the hearts of the people and will join the history of independent candidates that were successful in the political arena in Turks and Caicos Islands. Hon. Seymour was able to capture votes from supporters of both political parties and hence he won the seat in South Caicos.
Conclusion
I did not agree with some of the comments made during the campaign, but Hon. Seymour has proven to be someone on a mission to make a difference for the island of South Caicos.
If other politicians can do what they are doing, it will make a significant difference in the constituency. Imagine having a constituency office in your community even though there is a District Commissioner’s office there, this speaks volume.
Hon. Seymour, I underestimated you. You always told me I am one of the few people from South Caicos who did not want you to run as an independent candidate. Well, the people obviously wanted a change. If you stay on your current path, great things will happen for the people of South Caicos.
To the other parliamentarians, establish a constituency office, hire someone in that office and make yourself available to the people.
