Yesterday, HE the Governor, Dileeni Daniel-Selvaratnam met with the cast and crew of the new film the ‘Ripple Effect,’ which has been scripted and directed by TCI’s very own Malachi Jarrett. This impactful film, created by 13-21 year olds involved in Project I.D.E.A., supports young people entering careers in media. It is produced by One Island Media in conjunction with the Sports Commission. The movie premieres on Saturday, 15 June, and focuses on the critical issue of gun violence and its consequential impact on youth ambition and family life.

Director, Malachi Jarrett commenting on the production said:

“As a young man living in the TCI, I wanted to make a name for myself, developing something new, vibrant & different.

I was recommended to join the Project I.D.E.A club, where they taught me the foundation and rules needed in film, photography & content creation alongside other creative teens. I was able to apply this knowledge when given the opportunity to create a short film called “Ripple Effect”. The story is based on a young, ambitious female athlete with the goals of not just going to CARIFTA, the Caribbean Olympics, but also winning a gold medal for her country. However, due to family challenges and her brother’s anger, this led to her demise.

This film demonstrates how to be resilient and dedicated, but for me, how to be more communicative and confident in my teammates and in our training as we conceptualize the film.

Writing the screenplay and directing the film had its highs and lows, even though in the end it gave me an appreciation for those who have paved the way for me to enter into the film industry. This journey amplified my love for films and filmmaking, my goals, and my story ideas, which will move the public and their views of the story. The research for this film fostered a new curiosity for me in history through English.

This exercise has catapulted me to apply to universities to study filmmaking, where I have received various acceptance letters, but there’s one that I am most fond of that has offered me a partial scholarship. I am seeking a full scholarship to attend a film university to further me in my journey. Lastly, with all the creative ideas, the gear that we used, and the people in this film who volunteered their time, it wouldn’t have been possible without God.”
