Philip Bennetts KC Appointed As New Director Of Public Prosecutions
In an official statement, Her Excellency the Governor has announced the appointment of Mr. Philip Bennetts KC to the esteemed position of Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for the Turks and Caicos Islands. The selection process, conducted openly and in accordance with Section 91 of the Constitution, culminated in Mr. Bennetts’s appointment.
Expressing satisfaction with the decision, the Governor remarked, “Through a rigorous recruitment process and extensive consultations with key stakeholders, including the Hon. Premier, the Hon. Leader of the Opposition, and the Judicial Services Commission, Mr. Philip Bennetts KC has been chosen as the next Director of Public Prosecutions.” The Governor highlighted Mr. Bennetts’s impressive record as prosecution counsel in handling serious and intricate criminal cases, expressing confidence in his ability to lead the Office of the DPP effectively.
Acknowledging Dr. Angela Brooks for her interim role as Acting DPP, the Governor emphasized the importance of Mr. Bennetts’s appointment in upholding the integrity and fairness of the criminal justice system.
In response to his appointment, Mr. Bennetts KC conveyed his anticipation to assume the role of Director of Public Prosecutions, regarding it as a significant privilege. He expressed readiness to apply his accumulated expertise to address the challenges within the criminal justice system, emphasizing the importance of ensuring justice for all victims and witnesses.
Mr. Bennetts KC is scheduled to commence his duties as DPP at the onset of June 2024.
