Review Of Electoral District Boundaries In Turks & Caicos Islands Underway
GRAND TURK, TURKS AND CAICOS, 18 APRIL 2024 – The Electoral District Boundary Commission has commenced its review, as mandated by Section 61 of the Turks and Caicos Islands constitution. Appointed on 26th February 2024 by Her Excellency the Acting Governor Mrs. Anya Williams, the Commission is tasked with evaluating and potentially altering existing boundaries to ensure fair representation.
The Commission, chaired by Rev Dr. Julia E Williams, a retired Civil Servant and Methodist Minister, comprises Hon Justice K Neville Adderley and Ms. Tremaine R S Harvey LLB(hons), an Attorney at Law. Empowered by the Constitution, the Commission is granted autonomy in its proceedings, free from external influence.
To fulfill its objectives, the Commission is engaging in extensive public consultation, inviting input from residents and stakeholders across all islands. Deliberations will include meetings with key officials such as the Chief Statistician, Director of Survey and Mapping, and Supervisor of Elections.
With a commitment to transparency and inclusivity, the Commission will visit each island, facilitating face-to-face discussions with community members. Scheduled meetings are as follows:
- Salt Cay: 13th May 2024, 10:00 a.m.
- Grand Turk: 13th May 2024, 6:30 p.m.
- South Caicos: 14th May 2024, 6:30 p.m.
- North Caicos: 15th May 2024, 6:30 p.m.
- Middle Caicos: 16th May 2024, 10:00 a.m.
- Providenciales: 17th May 2024, 7:00 p.m.
Additionally, the Commission aims to finalize its draft report by 30th April 2024, followed by courtesy calls to HE the Governor, the Premier, the Leader of the Opposition, and the Attorney General.
Through these efforts, the Commission seeks to ensure electoral districts are aligned with population demographics, fostering equitable representation for all residents of Turks and Caicos Islands.
