Airports Authority Eyes 24-Hour Operations, Launches Scholarship Initiative
The Turks and Caicos Islands Airports Authority (TCIAA) is making strides towards implementing 24-hour operations at the Providenciales/Howard Hamilton International Airport, aiming to enhance efficiency and service quality. Godfrey Smith, CEO of TCIAA, revealed plans to recruit additional Air Traffic Controllers to facilitate round-the-clock operations at the airport and extend operating hours at Grand Turk Airport until midnight.
Currently, TCIAA faces staffing challenges, with seven Air Traffic Controller positions remaining vacant out of a total of 24. Smith acknowledged recent industrial actions from ATCs, emphasizing the need to fill vacancies and foster a supportive work environment.
Recognizing recruitment as a critical issue, Smith highlighted efforts to improve recruitment strategies and address capital spending shortcomings. TCIAA aims to enhance passenger satisfaction at Howard Hamilton International Airport, targeting a 30% increase in seating capacity by the second quarter of the year.
To address staffing shortages and invest in human capital, TCIAA plans to launch a scholarship program, allocating $25,000 annually to support a student’s education in relevant fields. Upon graduation, the student will join TCIAA, contributing to the company’s operations.
With a budget allocation of $49 million for the current financial year, TCIAA remains committed to optimizing airport operations and delivering exceptional service to travelers in the Turks and Caicos Islands.
