RTCIPF Intercepts Two Illegal Vessels Smuggling 287 Migrants and Puppies in Turks and Caicos
The Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force (RTCIPF) recently made significant interceptions, capturing two illegal vessels transporting a total of 287 irregular migrants along with puppies. Assistant Commissioner of Police (Specialist Tactical Operations) Mat Newton provided details of the operations.
On April 5th, acting on intelligence from the United States Air Asset, authorities intercepted a speedboat carrying 30 irregular migrants and six puppies, one of which was deceased. The vessel, equipped with engines stolen from Providenciales, was seized by the Department of Environment and Coastal Resources with assistance from the TCI Regiment and RTCIPF Marine Branch.
The following day, another vessel was spotted near Inagua and South of West Caicos. With coordinated efforts from various agencies including the RTCIPF Marine Branch, TCI Regiment, Radar Station, and Immigration Task Force, the Bahamas Defense Coast Guard intercepted the vessel in Inagua. This vessel was found to be transporting 257 irregular migrants, comprising 218 males and 39 females.
Assistant Commissioner Newton emphasized the need for comprehensive approaches to combat smuggling and trafficking across borders. He thanked local, regional, and international partners for their collaboration, highlighting the importance of public cooperation in providing crucial information for investigations.
The incidents underscore the urgency for enhanced vigilance and cooperation among law enforcement agencies and the public to prevent illegal activities and ensure border security.
