TCI Residents Take Walk-Through of Providenciales Landfill Amid Concerns
Residents of Providenciales recently participated in a walk-through of the landfill, accompanied by consultants from the Caribbean Development Bank tasked with its restoration. The initiative, organized by the Environmental Health Department (EHD), aimed to address concerns and provide insight into ongoing remediation efforts.
The invitation, extended to stakeholders from the wider community, facilitated visits to witness remediation works, particularly the extinguishing of deep-seated fires causing smoke nuisances to residents. Sessions were organized in groups of five to ensure efficient engagement.
Minister of Health and Human Services, Shaun Malcolm, commended the EHD for the initiative, emphasizing the importance of partnership in improving waste management practices. Under Malcolm’s leadership, alongside efforts from Kyle Knowles, Minister of Public Safety and Utilities, significant progress has been made in restoring the landfill, with regular updates provided to the public.
However, lingering uncertainties persist among residents, stemming from years of mismanagement and recurring issues such as fires and smoke emissions. A constituent, Finbar Grant, expressed confusion over the objectives of the new management company, TCI Green Ecological Corporation, and requested transparency regarding the $2.9 million contract signed with the government.
Grant emphasized the importance of transparency in understanding the terms and conditions of the contract, asserting the community’s right to hold all parties accountable and ensure good governance.
