Rise in Reported Sexual Assaults in Turks and Caicos Islands Linked to Improved Police Confidence and Victim Protection, says Police Superintendent”
Dean Holden, Superintendent of Safeguarding and Public Protection Unit in the Royal TCI Police, addressed the recent surge in reported sexual assaults in the Turks and Caicos Islands. Despite the regrettable increase in such offenses, Holden highlighted that the rise is partially attributed to enhanced confidence in the police force and improved victim protection measures. Speaking at a National Press Conference on December 22, Holden acknowledged the tendency for sexual offenses to be underreported and emphasized the positive impact of increased community engagement through the Safeguarding and Public Protection Unit.
Holden encouraged residents to consider this context when interpreting the higher numbers of reported incidents. Notably, statistical data on instances of domestic violence and sex crimes were not provided during the December 22 press conference. However, Superintendent Holden’s perspective aligns with October 2023 statistics from the Department of Gender Affairs, which also reported an increase in local domestic violence reports. In that instance, a greater willingness to report abuse was identified as a key factor contributing to the upsurge in reports.
