#TurksandCaicos, November 10, 2023 – Following a trend of petty burglaries in the slow moving Capital, a community watch group has formed in Grand Turk it is now warning residents to be more cautious about leaving windows open and general security.
Residents told Magnetic Media that food and other small items have been taken in the non-confrontation, non-violent break-ins. Though reports of robberies in Grand Turk are usually sporadic, when they do occur there tends to be a group of robberies rather than a single occurrence.
Concerns were also raised about a trend of silence from authorities regarding robberies in the nation’s capital.
“I don’t understand why these things are being kept from the people,” said Edwin Astwood, Grand Turk North Member of Parliament, when he spoke to our news team last week.
The interview was prompted after the residents took it upon themselves to issue the warning about the thefts.
Only four weeks ago residents reported a string of robberies in the nation’s capital which hit several businesses including restaurants and ATM machines. We had reached out to the police on those reports but got no reply.
The MP for Grand Turk South, told us he had seen and spoken to police on the night in question; on patrol the officers confirmed the series of robberies.
Still nothing was issued by police. No warnings or even acknowledgements of the incidents.
As for the residents who raised the alarm they say to their fellow islanders, “Please be alert and secure all doors and windows before going to bed and on leaving your home.”
The Royal TCI Police has still not yet reported on these crimes.
